WCS Approves Open Zoning for 2026-27 — Key Deadlines for Franklin Families
The Williamson County Board of Education voted unanimously in January to approve open zoned schools for the 2026-27 school year — a program that allows students living in Williamson County to apply to attend schools outside their assigned zone, provided space is available.
For families currently relocating to Franklin or planning a move, this is worth understanding before you finalize a home purchase.
How Open Zoning Works
Under Tennessee state law, school districts are required to identify schools with available enrollment capacity and open those spots to qualified applicants. Williamson County has operated a version of this program for years — the state law largely codified what WCS already had in place.
Applications for the 2026-27 school year opened February 4 and ran through April 15. Applicants must be Williamson County residents, and families approved for out-of-zone enrollment are responsible for their own transportation. If applications exceed available spots at a given school, the district conducts a random lottery.
Priority Assignments Worth Knowing
The board established priority placement for two specific groups of rising ninth graders in transition situations — Page Middle eighth graders zoned to Centennial High receive first priority for 80 available seats at Page High, and Freedom Middle eighth graders in the Franklin Special District zoned to Franklin High receive first priority for 157 seats at Centennial High.
What This Means for Relocating Families
Open zoning adds a layer of flexibility to Williamson County's school assignment system — but it's not a guarantee. Families who are purchasing a home with a specific school assignment in mind should not rely on open zoning as a backup plan. Zone assignments remain the primary determinant of which school your child attends.
The more important takeaway: verify the exact school zone for any address you're seriously considering using the WCS zone locator before closing. Zone boundaries shift as the district manages growth, and the assignment for a given address today may not be permanent.
